S-VHS is pretty good quality for consumer analog video that you could record onto. However, Laserdisc probably provided the best picture quality overall. Since Laserdisc is analog, there isn't any artifacting like there is with digital such as from HDTV, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD or standard DVD's. Laserdisc also supports analog audio, or digital if the author so desired. At least it was not compressed audio, however there is inherent loss, especially at 44.1kHz sampling. The real winner is a Laserdisc with pure analog Stereo Quadraphonic sound. Pump that into a completely non-solid state McIntosh amplifier and hand crafted speakers and you'll end up with a home theatre system that will knock the socks off any Dolby Digital or DTS system.
