How can any of us truly understand what 55 million dollars really is? When A-Rod makes more money that some small South American country's national doubt how are we supposed to put that in terms that we can comprehend?

We're not talking about people who are finding cures for cancer or discovering new food sources. We're talking about baseball, a kid's game played by grown men who, in many cases, haven't go the IQ of a grape. You said "Stop the madness" and I agree 100%. The day has already come where a family of four cannot afford to go to more than a game or two a year because of the cost.

No, Meche in not worth 55 million and neither is anyone else. We're talking baseball.....baseball for pete sakes!! It's not like the owners spend their own money when they build new ballparks. The poor dam tax payer gets hit over the head for a major portion and still have to pay to go to the ballpark. Most can't afford to go.

Sorry Ozgard, It finally had to come out sooner or later. I feel better now!!!

Yeah both guys are overpaid but I think Zito may have earned the right to be overpaid with the numbers he put up in Oakland, even though he's sucked since he left. As far as Meche goes, the Royals are trying to rebuild the team into a winner but really good pitchers don't want to go to a team like that. So they're going to have to overpay some guys to come play in KC until they can prove that they can contend. Meche has been pretty good for Kansas City this year, but hasn't gotten any run support since the All-Star break. Of his last 6 starts (he's 0-4 in those starts) he's only had one bad outing (4 innings, 6 ER) and that was against the Yankees. The rest of those starts he's pitched into or past the sixth inning and hasn't given up more than 3 runs. The Royals are only averaging 2.43 runs per game in those starts and 5 of those games were one run games. So, while he is overpaid, he hasn't been as bad as that 7-11 record shows.

No way. Gil Meche is a solid pitcher, and would be an excellent number 3 starter, but is not worth 11 million a year. But pitching is in high demand, so that's why teams are throwing millions at low-quality pitchers like Ted Lilly and Gil Meche.

If you look at it in a vacuum, then he's not worth the $55 million. But if you look at it in the context of the contracts already given this year to Juan Pierre, Adam Eaton, Vicente Padilla, Gary Matthews Jr. and others, then it's pretty much what you'd expect.

The new CBA, along with increasing revenues and a shortage of strong available talent, is driving everything completely out of whack. I never would have imagined Meche getting this kind of money a year ago, but things have definitely changed.

No, he's not worth that salary. But the whole baseball free agent market has gone crazy. And if you want to play, you have to pay.

The Royals (and their fans) likely are sick and tired of being in last place & the team had to do something to bring their fans back to the ballpark. The fans won't come back due to a stellar draft class: they needed to make a splash in this free agent market.

Not a bad move, but that money is simply crazy.
It ain't my money, so I don't really care.

I think, at best, this puts KC in 4th place
and sinks the whinny sux in dead last.

I guess KC was desperate for some pitching..i also believe they wanted to out bid the Cubs for his services

Sure he is...if he can juggle and do parlor tricks during the 7th inning stretch.
