This term begins to be used around 1820 to describe a social order in which sexual promiscuity would be normal and unremarkable. This is in contrast to the attitude right up to the 1950's that male promiscuity was inevitable (but of course not to mentioned openly) and female promiscuity was disgraceful.

Somehow, these standards never quite applied in the case of creative artists - musicians, poets, authors, painters and so on - or of monarchs, especially George IV and Edward VII.

"Free love" was a reaction to the double standard. In Woodhull's time, a man could have multiple sexual partners before--and even after--marriage and no one thought anything bad of him, but if a woman behaved in the same way, she was labeled a slut or worse. Women were expected to come into marriage with no prior sexual experience, but men were not.

Personally, I think "free love" is a misnomer--love costs, and the price is the mutual commitment of two people for life.

The term "free love" has been used to describe a social movement that rejects marriage, which proponents see has a form of social bondage, especially for women.

It also describes the beginning of a tennis match for which no one had to pay money. ;)

So did Red Hot Chili Peppers..."give it away now" ....
It also can be an expression of casual intimacy w/out a commitment or relationship
