Since you (no one) can forget unless you are amnesiac, the best you can do is make a conscious decision not to worry (you can do that, at least); take it a day at a time; just accept that you are not in control of the situation and, in time, you will think less and less about it.
Someday, if it does not go the way you seem to want (longing for it) you will find yourself not as interested as before and, you may wonder why you ever wanted it in the first place. (Experience speaks!)
Don't worry - try to occupy idle time with other matters - get involved in something challenging, take a course in something which would benefit you and little by little you will feel differently. It only takes time to deal with it; you just let it!
Give it your best shot!

This is a difficult question to answer or comment on without knowing what it is that can't be. You may be surprised to discover that perhaps you shouldn't forget it, but remember.
By choosing to remember, you may build more character for the future. You may, if applicable, develop a more reasonable expectation of things that may be possible. There have been times where I have unreasonably expected things that I should have known couldn't be possible. With life's minimized rate of expectancy, doesn't it make sense to spend what little time we have on things which have a greater probability of happening?

Please read your question & THINK about it. "..IT CAN'T BE & IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN." It's your choice to long for it the rest of your life, & it may "seem" at the moment that you will, but believe me, you won't. No one could (unless psychologically impaired), obsess about something for the rest of their life. You can "prolong" the feeling by dwelling on it, or you can decide to move forward & get involved in "the rest of your life." I know that sounds easy, & isn't, but what do you prefer? To be unhappy or happy? Break out of the box--don't "let" your negative feelings control you, & deprive you of all the wonderful things "out there." Negative feeings harm you emotionally, & physically. Every single day is worth feeling "good." I wish you the best.
Edit: I noted that many of the answers have "bits & pieces" of what I suggested. But one suggested anti-depressants. Try not to go that route unless you're clinically depressed.

longing for something is not a bad thing. it can be the spur to keep you going. Having a dream, even if it is perhaps near impossible, is a wonderful thing. The future is bleak without dreams, without some degree of 'aim', even when it is painful.
There can be confusion between 'hopefulness' and 'longing' - longing tends to hurt more. Perhaps the answer is to somehow try to reframe our emotions as more 'hopeful' ....rather than longing. Just a tad.

Just do your best to let it go. It might suck alot and you might think about it all the time, but you'll get over it eventually. Certain things happen to help you forget about other things. Good luck.

Just by acknowledging I can't have something and it will never happen...so I focus on what I can have. You mostly CHOOSE how you feel. No one wants to hang around an EMO sap unless they themselves are miserable. I don't have the patience or time for that crap!

You can never forget if you want it really bad. Sorry! You may want to put your feelings into a new song, poem or short story. Reading or listening to it may help you to decide what you have to do... break free or stick around.

learn how to be in "control" of your mind, a critical ability for leading a "conscious" life. read *the complete idiot's guide to toltec wisdom* for very helpful guidelines and practices. 99% of the species has no idea that they are able to have this type of "control". look at the results. good luck ;-)

for some reason i think you may be in love if so just talk to him or her casually and show h/s that you have feelings for them becasue if you dont you'll spend the rest of your life wondering. "what if" and suffer everyday. i know this from experiance its not healthy to hold in the feeling of love.
