Some laptops have weak speakers. You can try a couple things. There is (on many laptops) a blue Fn key in the lower left hand of the keyboard. There are a couple blue speaker icons towards the upper right, or on the numbers across the top. Try holdng the blue Fn Key down while pressing the speaker icons to see if you can change the volume up and down.
Go to your volume control and crank all the bars all the way up. The main volume may be all the way up, but make sure the wav one is all the way up as well.

You didn't mention the speakers sounding like snap, crackle, pop, so I assume the speakers work fine, just not loud enough.

There are three places to set speaker volume: 1) Hardware, 2) OS, and 3) application. 1) First turn your hardware volume as loud as it can go. usually there is a dial on the notebook, but sometimes this is keyboard controlled. my laptop uses a blue FN key and the up/down arrows, but this varies by make. 2) Next, open Settings Control Panel, Sound. Unmute everything and push all the sliders to their max. Save settings. 3) Open your media program, find the volume control and push those to the max.

Is it possible that your WAVE volume has changed? Double click on the sound icon to open sound control. Then make sure that the WAVE volume is up.

RealPlayer changes your WAVE volume as opposed to its own volume. If you use that, that might be the problem. If you want to make sure that it stays the same, then make sure that you bring the volume up in RealPlayer before leaving.

have you checked the volume control in the bottom right corner of the screen... check there first and see if the volume is at its max output. then if that doesnt fix anything its the speakers on the machine itself, theyre only made to go so loud, my suggestion is to invest into some speakers, look for high watt output for what ever budget you have.

Have you checked the volume settings in windows? There should be a speaker icon in the system tray (down by the clock), click on that and check the volume setting in there. It may be turned down.
