What's the physics behind having a hole at the top of my coffe lid? (Not the drinking hole.) And I see this on my coffe mug.

A vent. When you drink coffee from your mug, you are creating a vacuum. The hole keeps equilibrium by allowing air into your coffee mug to replace the coffee that you're drinking. To better understand it, try this, take a plastic milk carton and fill it with water. If you turn it upside down (preferably over the sink, and not your computer) the water will slurp out as air rushes in, and the sides will collapse as the vacuum causes the pressure outside of the carton to press in. Now try the same thing with a vent: Keep the lid on the carton when you turn it upside down, poke a good size hole in the bottom of the carton, then remove the lid. The hole will allow air to flow into the carton and stabilize the pressure.

If there weren't a little hole on the top of the coffee cup lid, then, when you sucked out the coffee, the paper/plastic cup would collapse because of the drop in volume of the contents. The hole allows air to enter so the cup retains its original shape and volume.

I could get a bit technical and start talking about pressure change inside the coffee cup, which is what causes it to collapse unless sufficiently rigid; but in essence the above is correct.

Coffee releases a certain scent which attracts aliens. If the coffee scent builds up under the lid and is released all at once the likely hood of an alien closing in on the scent is greatly increased. Therefore, the scent is released slowly and in minute amounts. Coincidentally, when a spaceship crashed in Roswell, New Mexico, it was found within a quarter mile of a large coffee shop. Hope this helps.

as you can notice the hole is placed exacly were the tip of the nose falls. The reason for this is so that you can tell if coffee is too hot before you drink it and dont burn mouth.
