Frozen Waffles and Those Big Soft Pretzels (frozen of course), Those worked wonders.
Rub a bit of whiskey on the gums.
This is all old school stuff that works very well and our ped.'s Dr highly recommended.

take a pacifier and put it in the frezeer for a lil bit, until it is resonably cold. the coolness should offer some relief and fits in his mouth a lil easier than the teething rings. you could also try putting the ring in the freeaer as well. he is going to be fussy for a while since he has no idea how to deal with this new sensation. another trick to get him to go to sleep a lil easier, is to dip your finger into some brandy (yes the alcohol) then rub your finger across his gums. don't do this a lot. but it works when all else fails and you need him to lay down for a moment.

oh yeah, theres other tricks. frozen carrots, frozen wash cloth, OR, and this is my favorite, go to the super market, and look for a fruit feeder. it looks like a pacifier, only it has a net bag where the nipple should be. add some frozen fruits, and voila! the sweetness of the fruits should convince him to chew on it. oh, and cut a plain bagel into quarters and freeze it. my little girl was the same way, stubborn about all kinds of things like that. she refused to take a pacifier, she refused to take a bottle, refused to take a teething ring, refused to even take a sippy cup. finally, i got wise. i went out, and bought sippy cups, id fill one up with juice, and carry it around all day, sucking on it wildly going mmmmmmmm! oh! this is sooooooo goooooooood! mmmmm! and id ignore her and drink out of it all day long. less than a week later, she was reaching for it. same thing with chewing on the bagels when she was teething, id grab one from the freezer, and chew on it, and walk around with it, and generally make a big deal, and sure enough, she took it a few days later. once she started taking the frozen bagels and fruit, her teething went soooo much smoother. all in all, you can get a baby to do anything with monkey see monkey do. just pick something, and do it yourself, while pretending to ignore him. hell want it before too long. good luck hun!

I used to work in a nursery but I thought of this all by myself. You know those frozen popsicles sold at stores for like 2 dollars? I would let them suck on those. Numbing gels I think are dangerous simply because the babies don't have comtrol over theri bites and may put something in their mouths or hurt themselves without knowing.

If you are breast feeding, I would suggest not letting your baby chew on your finger. I made this mistake with my last son and boy did I pay the price for that. He chewed my boob raw.
Anyway, they make teething toys now that vibrate when you chew on them. This also stimulates the cause/effect area of their brain. Also, put some water in a little hard spout sippy cup. He probably won't be able to drink out of it yet but will love chewing on the hard spout. Good luck.

I love the "let him chew on your finger" answer - yes, I've done this with all of my children.
Here's another idea - Put a chunk of frozen banana, frozen peach, or frozen pear in a Baby Safe Feeder. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2404768&cp=&view=all&f=Taxonomy%2FTRUS%2F2255957&origkw=feeding&kw=feeding&parentPage=search
This feeder has a mesh holder that you put the frozen fruit into, then screw on the handle, and baby can hold the handle and mouth the frozen fruit. You may have to hold this while your baby enjoys the cold, sweet fruit, but it might be something he likes, and it might feel good on his gums.
Just an idea from a mother of 5.

If he dislikes the gel Orajel also has a q-tip application that is liquid. ou snap off one end and the loss of vacuum makes the liquid flood the other end with numbing liquid. Mine loved it and hated the gel.
Also as someone metioned the rag in cold water is a good one!

childrens ibuprophin reduces the swelling that causes the pain, unlike chidlrens tylenol, which doesnt reduce swelling at all.

try a sugar tit. this is a clean rag soaked in milk or formula and has bread and a bit of sugar in it. Tie it up bag style and let baby suck and chew. This was what my mom and I both used and it does help. Good luck and hang in there, they don't teethe forever.
