Genesis is a pre-scientific work that is theological, not biological.
It is impossible that the authors could have had "intent" based upon a scientific theory that would not become current until 2500-3000 years later.

I'm not sure what you mean by the intent of evolution in Genesis. But, I do believe that Genesis and evolution can combine in a rational way. See, even my Catholic school teachers admitted that the 7 day creation was false; it is simply an understandable amount of time. Creation, even for God, would have taken thousands of years. In that time, he could see that things need to be "tweaked" (as in, well, that's good, but I think it would be better like this). However, you cannot suddenly add new animals without upsetting the ecosystem totally. The logical way is to have "current" animals slowly evolve in a way that won't upset it. So, God--or whoever created the universe--realized this and made sure that this happened in a correct manner.
The Bible is not a science book as the others have said. It's nearly impossible to find any rational scientific thought in there. Think of it as more of a loosely historical and strongly faithful reference book.

The intent of evolution in genesis? There is no mention of evolution in Genesis, let alone the intent of it. I cannot think af anything that would make sense out of what you asked.

Science, religion, and philosophy are all attempts to explain the world around us and our place in it. Genesis tells a tales of creation -- matter and energy -- the formation of the Earth and oceans -- the rise of life, simple to complex. Science adds testing to the imagination.

Evolution is not science, it is metaphysics. It was not arrived at by the Scientific Method. It is just a fairy tale for grownups.
Unfortunately, most scientists today just accept, because they really don't see any alternative, and they are afraid to publicly reject it. There really is no scientific explanation for the origin of life, just like there is no scientific explanation for consciousness, music appreciation or a myriad of other things.
You can believe whatever you wish, but there is no way one organism can evolve into another, It has never been observed, it never happened.

My former girlfriend used to say "The Bible isn't a science book. It isn't a history book either."
Stop looking for science in Genesis. You won't find it.
