It seems you are reluctant to tell him because it might hurt his feelings - you seems concern. On the other hand you probably not able to forget about your relationship with him.
You could still be friends can't you? I mean we are not things or possessions and nothing is permanent.
Does he know in the first place that you are breaking up with him? Explain that you would like to move on with your life - it would be good if you could do this in public but in a private and subtle way.
If you do have a new boyfriend and if you have explained to him, then it would be good to have a double date. Perhaps bring a girl friend with you for him. The point here is that you do care for you ex-boyfriend and still wish to be friends.
If there is no concern at all, there is nothing to say after you have explained to him about your position and what you look forward.

Well i dont know your situation quit well...like what did he do to you to break up?..how close were you?...Soo alls i can tell you is that the mature thing to do is not hate your ex-boyfriend everyone always has this assumption that they should just hate the person they dated and they canttt be friends...it will never be the same but talk about general things...and again i dont know if u want him but if u do its a whole new case...If that is then play hard to get and make him jealous.

Why talk to him.? He is your ex. And if you have to just keep it simple and short. A hi how are you or what you been up to is a good start
