Murex is a type of salve named for the sea creatures in which it was originally found and used by natives in the south sea islands for insect bites and such. This secretion by the shellfish had a numbing affect on the small fish and worms that the shell fish captured for food rendering the prey harmless, immobile and easy to devour. The indigenous people from the south sea isles recognize that when put on the insect bites that it took away the sting and numb the pain. Scientist now make a synthetic form and you can get it as an over the counter drug at any local pharmacy.
