If you leave them sitting while they are wet, they mildew and get gross, you have to wash them, and if you use soap and hang them up to dry, they won't smell funny.

Your clothes start to smell when they get wet because they have a mildew on them. Its kind of like your clothes get sour and spoil almost like with milk, but not as bad. Did I help any?

I assume you mean if you're not doing laundry. They would smell if water gets on them and they just sit around. The odor is from mildew, it has a distinct odor. The way to prevent mildew is to wash wet clothes immediately.
