There isn't one specific printer that's going to stand out above the rest, it depends on what you're using it for. There are several things to consider when it comes to printers. Speed, functionality, ink cost, enhanced features such as water and fade resistant ink.

If you're looking for an all in one printer, scanner, copier, and fax I would say go with the HP 6180. This is the fastest ink jet on the market right now and all the ink together plus 150 sheets of 4x6 photo paper is only 35.99 at best buy. It also has built in wireless and bluetooth.

If you do not need to be able to fax, go with the HP 5180. It has all fo the same features as the above printer and runs for around $150. Takes the same kind of ink as the 6180.

If you go with an HP printer, look for one that takes the 02 ink series. Which is the 35.99 package I mentioned.

However, epson now has high defiition printers. They're known of their durabrite ink. They have now came out with waterproof, scratch proof, and fade resistant ink. That's one thing that does make them stand out. Some even have the ability to print lables onto cds/dvds in true high definition, they look as if they came manufactured with the cover on them. Their ink prices are more expensive, however.

Lasers are always going to be faster but are far more expensive.

One thing to keep in mind, is that printers do not come with usb cables, so either way make sure you pick one up.

HP 1020 Laser printer is great and very cheap. It starts printing right after you click print. It is less than $100. Dont miss! Good luck!

If laser, I prefer Brother - have 3 brother printers and they are all steady, never broke and etc.

Can't give advice on color ones though -
