In the movie I am thinking of, a cop goes into a diner and doesn't have the case to tip the waitress. She gets annoyed, so he promises her that if his lottery ticket wins, he will split the winnings with her. If not, he will return with a tip. The lottery ticket DOES win and he splits the money with her. Of course, a friendship (and I believe a relationship) occur later on.

I'm making a reference to it in a paper I am writing (a critique of a play with a similar plot), and I have completely blanked on the title!

Thanks!

I think you're thinking of "It Could Happen To You" (1994) Starring Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, and I think Red Buttons was also in it. Hope that helps!
