Do people think that bus speeds and CPU speeds will reach a peak? What do people think standard specifications will be in say, ten years time?

Yes. Theoretically, all computer speeds are bounded by the speed of electrons in conductive mediums. Even if optical computers (computers that use fiber optics) are developed, their speed will be upper bound by the speed of light. Of course, if general purpose quantum computers are developed then our current notion of computer speeds will need to be completely changed. Regarding the standards specifications, it depend on what you are refering to. There a hundreds of standards, from those describing floating point number formats to those describing routing protocols in ad hoc networks. Providing an exhaustive list of the possible changes that may occur in the next 10 years for all these standards would be futile.

No cos once they reach a peak with 1 type of technology another technology or approach would be ready to propel it further into the next level of computing.
For example portable storage media like floppies once they reached their limit of 1.4mb zipdrives, cd's dvd's and now blu ray disks have replaced them to allow 50Gb of data to be writen onto a single blu ray disk

Technology can never be held down it will allways find a way to resurface .

Well with Intels new Core 2 Chip, the processor speed has been dropped from 3.x GHz to 2.XX GHz.

Other vendors are experimenting with using fiber optics in processors as opposed to semiconductor doping using silicon.

It is predicted that silcon transistors will halt further speed increases through transistor shrinking by 2012. That is, you cannot shrink silicon transistors any further. There are many other transistors being tested, but none are yet up to production to replace the silicon transistor in mass quantities and low cost.

As long as there are technical breakthroughs computers will never reach a peak.

Year after year, the trade say there will be problems going faster or in the case of hard drives bigger.

At yet 10 years on things are still going forward.
