It's kind of hard for us to imagine how far drum sounds might have carried in the prehistoric times, because there's so much loud ambient noise in our environments now-- automobiles and planes and leaf-blowers and all kinds of things that make noise, noise, noise. But back in the prehistoric times it's possible that drum sounds could carry for miles.

It makes an interesting picture, thinking about some group of prehistoric hunters or foragers standing in the quiet of a veldt or mountain meadow, shadows of twilight rolling in, and the sound of distant drums telling them that somewhere across the land there were other people...

Drums migrated out of Africa into the Middle East in pre-Roman times and into Eastern Europe by the 14th Century, used as tools to inspire fear into opposing armies; they were later used throughout these ages as communications devices for military formations - by the 18th Century, they eventually became a casual music instrument along side others of the age.

Military side drums used to keep marching soldiers in time are the precursor to marching bands, while drum use in popular music began to flourish in the early 20th Century when Jazz and other non-classical music styles began to emerge.
