The Australian continent is closer to the South Pole. There are 3610 miles (5809 km) between the two, to be more precise.

The south pole is located in Antarctica. South America is the closest continent to Antarctica

The Australian continent (specifically Tasmania at 42.52 S latitude) is closer to the south pole than Africa's southern most point (Cape Agulhas, at 34.50 S latitude).

But South America's southernmost point (Cape San Pio) is closer still, at 55.03 S latitude.
