Promethius... more comonly spelled as prometheusis a mythological greek elder god (a titan, of sorts). Unlike the other titans, however, when they revolted against zues, promethius alone abandoned the titans to fight on the side of zues. He is generally considered the god of compassion and love of humanity. Some accounts claim that promethius was chosen as one of the creators of man. What most people have said is only somewhat true, greek myth holds that promethius didn't STEAL fire from zues, but rather tricked zues into giving fire to humans... not to make them equal to the gods, but rather to make them superior to the animals (something the other gods did not want, since they had given greater gifts to other animals). He also tricked zues into letting humans keep the best parts of sacrificed animals. Promethius is also said to have some gift in foresight, so he must have known prior to his action what his punishment would be (the whole chained to a rock and eagles would tear at his stomach... but he couldnt die, being a god and whatnot). He was supposed to be there until he confessed (using his foresight) which of zues' children would revolt against him... however, hercules rescued him.

In addition to giving man the gift of fire, Prometeus was also said to have created man out of clay. (His brother created the animals.) He loved his creation so much that is why he stole fire from the gods to give to man. To punish him Zeus chained him to a rock and every day an eagle came and ate his liver. Being immortal, he would heal and then must endure the torment again the next day. He was finally freed by Hercules. At Rockefeller center, the golden statue is of Prometheus.

Promethius was a greek character who stole fire from the gods to give it to man. His punishment was to be chained to a boulder where an eagle would eat his liver daily. (It always grew back). One of the labors of Hercules was to free him. Generally his story is regarded as a cautionary tale of man tinkering in God's domain. Mary Shelley subtitled Frankenstain "The Modern Prometheus" as a reference to that moral.
