It depends upon the device. IDE hard drives use a parallel method of data transfer while SATA hard drives use a serial method. SATA hard drives are faster.

In regards to printing, USB would be faster than Parallel or serial

In regards to external devices USB would be the faster unless of course you are using a SATA adapter card.

Look up transfer rates for SATA and USB to see the differences.

USB is the fastest. Just look at the link bellow. It shows you all common port speeds. USB is 480mbs while serial is 230kbps.
