I've thought that for a very long time also because someone I love very much is an alcoholic and if it were illegalized, not half the horrible things that has happened to him, would have happened. I've always heard, and seen for myself, that pot DOES NOT do the same to you as alcohol. As for alcohol ever being illegal, i doubt that will ever happen, then all the countrues big shots would have to go without....

Marijuana *is* harmful.
It's a drug. It alters your mental state. You are not as alert, capable, or able to perform tasks while high. And it IS often a stepping-stone to harder drugs. In addition to that, the unfiltered smoke is even worse for your lungs than cigarettes are.
I am an ex-smoker. Life is better on the clean side, although sadly it is almost impossible to have this epiphany while still smoking.
Both alcohol and marijuana have the potential to be extraordinarily harmful. It's dangerous to drive under the influence of either one.

Pot will never be legal but will ALWAYS be available. I'm sure the dealers of today's quality herb are making tons of cash. I'd rather see it go to them then our inept government, anyways. US weed growers are not violent like the cocaine/herion smugglers!!
Once cultivation moved indoors in the 80's, the cops have had a much harder time "weeding" out the growers!! Usually stupidity get these growers busted. Every time I hear about a bust, it's either someone ratted them out or they were caught stealing electricity from the power company. Smart growers ALWAYS stay under the radar!!
If you smoke, as long as you're not walking down the street puffing a joint, you sould never get caught!! Also, never carry more than 1/8 at a time on you...............that's just plain stupid!!

To the first part - yes. To the second part - no.
I do think that pot smoking is likely to be less damaging to the body and mind than alcohol, but I can't prove that.
The original laws against pot were based on a bunch of hysteria, racism, and societal pressures, not science, not facts. They should be rolled back unless peer-reviewed scientific research can prove that pot and its derivatives are overwhelmingly harmful to the extent that the government needs to step in to abrogate personal freedoms in favor of the greater public good.
If the state or society wants strongly enough to discourage the use of legal mind-altering substances, they can find the bucks to mount persuasive public education efforts to minimize the use. Otherwise, they should stay the heck out of individual choices that do not egregiously infringe on the rights of the rest of society.

No, I think they should both be legal
**EDIT**
To those claiming that marijuana is a "stepping stone" to harder drugs: think about why it could be. Is it because a person smokes a joint and then wants to do cocaine and then heroine? OR Is it because the person who smokes a joint will have access (connections) to other drugs? The fact that it is illegal is what gives people these associations. If a person could purchase legal marijuana at the convenience store, they would not also be able to purchase cocaine or heroine. Another reason for the supposed stepping stone is that some users may begin to see themselves as deviant, soley on the basis of it being against the law, therefore they decide to try other things. This is known as 'self-fulfilling prophecy.' Furthermore, when a person uses marijuana for the first time and realizes that they have been lied to about the effects and they don't feel the urge to jump off of a building, they might decide to experiment with other drugs in order to determine if they were lied to about that also. In short, legalizing marijuana would eliminate the supposed "stepping stone" theory of progressive drug use.

I completely believe that pot should be legalized. It's proven time and time again that alcohol is the number 1 contributer to vehicular homicide and violence. Weed isn't going to cause someone to beat the hell out of another person, or drive a car irratically, or randomly become violent. Weed also has absolutely no addictive quality, therefore, nobody can be affected by any withdrawl symptoms. It's a fact that alcohol withdrawl is more deadly than heroin withdrawl.
Now, legalized weed should be taxed, available to only 21+, and available in only small amounts. All in all, stoned Americans are going to sit on their ***, watch TV, and eat junk food. Which, to me, is a better alternative to getting trashed and driving home from a bar.

I think any type of drug or alcohol should be outlawed. If you think that people cannot kill anyone behind the wheel after smoking pot, my husband would like to tell you different. He was hit from behind at a stop light and was almost killed because the guy was high, speeding, and going 50 miles an hour without trying to stop. The impact almost killed my husband.

I certainly do not agree with you. Marijuana is a stepping stone to harder drugs. It leads people into a life style that you wouldn't want your children to go into. I was a Police Officer in Chicago for 32 years and I have seen the effects of smoking pot. Its bad enough that we have alcohol, do we want another problem?
