My landlord has been going into people's apartments when they are not home. I would like to know if he is doing the same to me. I need a way to tell if he has opened the door but nothing he would notice to fix before he left. AND I also have to get in the door without causeing the same reaction or else I won't know if it is him or me. I know I didn't say this very well sorry.

When you close the door, wedge a small piece of paper at the bottom of the door jam next to the hinges. Just enough that it's sticking out so you can grab when you open the door but far enough in that its not noticeable. If it's on the ground when you come home, doors been opened. A more high tech solution would be to hide and point a video camera at the door. That way you can sue the guy if he goes in your home. Much more fun.

I had a similar problem. I took a piece of tape and taped the door to the door jam in a discreet location (near the bottom, out of sight). If anyone enters while you are not there, it will break the tape. Make sure it is secure when you apply it. Of course you will need to reapply each time you leave..but if you find evidence, then invest in a video monitor if you have the money..you can install a cheap nanny cam type thing that will capture his entrance. What he is doing is illegal.

B-movie private eyes ALWAYS put something, a piece of paper, a toothpick or something in between the door and the jam as they leave their house. Put it about 6 inches off the floor. Your landlord won't even notice it or think to look for it....... unless he's a B-movie private eye fan...

Put a hair or string in the door crack and if the door gets opened the hair or string will fall. Be sure to put it where it can't move unless the door is opened.

Setup your motion enabled webcam and point it at the door. If/when the door is opened, it'll be captured on vid.
