An ovarian cyst is just a sac on your ovary. Everybody has them... they are where the egg grows before you ovulate. The problem is when they don't dissolve like they should (within a few months after that ovulation, they should be gone). Then they can get large and painful. The size you cite is on the large end, but still well within the normal range. If the doc says its a "functional cyst", you don't need to worry... it won't lead to anything more serious. Large cysts can give you the symptoms of pregnancy (missed periods, weight gain, nausea, frequent urination)

They may want you to wait a few months and then repeat your ultrasound and see if the thing has shrunk up and gone away. If it doesn't improve, they may try and treat you with birth control pills to prevent ovulation, other hormone therapies, or laparoscopic surgery. The surgery is pretty minor. Since your doctor didn't flip out I suspect that's what's going on, although they should have explained all of this to you.

If your docotr checked you on Monday, what did he say? Schedule an cystectomy or any other treatment? Sometimes ovarian cysts can be in combination with P.I.D. (Pelvic Inflmmatory Disease)

Are you taking medications. Tell your doctor.
