It certainly has got to do with covalent bonds! It's a rather weak, totally non-polar covalent bond.

The bond in F2 molecule is a single covalent bond having p-p orbital overlapping.
A F atom has electronic configuratin 1s2,2s2,2px2,2py2,2pz1.The 2pz orbital overlaps with 2pz orbital of other F atom having electron with opposite spin.So is F2 molecule formed.
