Usually 2 weeks notice is standard. Unless you signed a contract that states how much time you should give. It gives them time to find a replacement for you, and anything less than 2 weeks and they won't give you a good reference. I also think you should look at how long you've worked there. Did you just start, and hate it immediately? Or have you been there for 10 years? The longer you've been there, the more time you should give them. It also depends on your reason for leaving. If you start another job in a month, give them a month.

in a professional position the time is now, don't delay if this is the type of job you have.
the employer would not hesitate to have you clean out your desk and walk you to the door with a guard.
However, if the job is congenial and the notification is polite for a marriage or moving from the area, two weeks would be sufficient.

The general rule of thumb is two weeks, but how many weeks notice would your employer give you if he were to lay you off. Look at your work contract, it probably says something to the effect of when mutually "agreeable time."

no, standard is 2 weeks. You want to be able to give them as a refernce for another job. Never try to burn bridges.
