Can anyone tell me if they have used the sealants you can buy to block up the head gasket, and if so, do they work?

I had an air lock which when released seemed to solve the problem, but only briefly. I am now pouring smoke out of my exhaust and would rather not pay the cost of replacing the head gasket if I don't need to. Also, how much is it to replace head gasket? And what does it actually do?

Hi there im not a big fan of sealants myself as it is merely treating the symptom not the cuase. The headgasket is a seal between the cylinder block and the cylinder head and its usually a durable seal that lasts a long time. The head gasket has to contend with the compresion generated in the engine, heat from the coolant that circulates round the engine and oil as well. To replace a head gasket usually takes a few hours as you need to dismantle the top half of the engine to remove the cylinder head and then clean up the mating surfaces as well. When replacing a head gasket it is a good idea to replace the timing belt as well as if the head gasket has leaked oil on to the belt it can cause the belt to fail

the sealants you can buy from the shops will only be a tempory fix, but you will need to get the head gasket fixed. have you let the car overheat? if so then you will need to get the head pressure tested and maybe skimmed. and then the cost will start mount. i am a mechanic and to have all this wrok done will cost about £500 maybe more. the head gasket provides a seal between the bottom of the engine and the head (top of the engine) this also keeps the compression ratio correct due to the thickness. it also stops coolant from entering the combustion chambers and also mixing with the oil in the engine. hope this helps.

Is this a mk1 Punto? If so, upon renewal of the cam-belt, it's advisable to renew the cam belt pre tensioner at the same time, these are prone to whining in time when the engine is cold.
