It sounds as though those answerers are talking about a computer game.
I have played Mah Jongg with tiles and dice and you build a wall of tiles 2 rows deep. Then the tiles are divvied out and used. You settle your tiles, then pick up and discard until a win, which has to be something like "Rummy" winning. Sets of matching tiles.
It was very popular in my mother's day - the 30s and 40s and we played a lot in the next couple of decades. I own our family set and have taught the kids to play. Haah! they would rather do a computer game any day. SADLY.

My family played the tile version when we lived in singapore. it is a kick to see the "old pros" playing it, they can run through a whole set of games in less times than it takes for us to build the wall.
