Hi, I am an auto technician. Yes, this is a real failure in some states. I am a licensed New York State Inspector, and that is one of the criteria for the inspection. Here we have to verify that the light comes on when the key is turned on. This is done as a "bulb test" procedure. Like the other answer states, if it does not light up then, it's likely it will not let you know there is a problem. As for the possible causes, there could be several. A lot of times, it's a simple fix, like a blown fuse, or the bulb has actually burned out. I have seen times where the bulb had been removed, usually by the previous owner to hide a problem before selling the car. It's not uncommon to see a wiring failure in the light circuit, and there is the possibilty that the PCM (engine computer) is not functioning properly, too. The first step is to diagnose why the light does not come on, and then you need to determine if the computer has a reason to keep the light on, because that will fail for inspection, too. Your best bet is to find a reputable repair shop that specializes in diagnostics and driveability. They will diagnose it properly, and explain your options. I would be interested in hearing the solution, if you don't mind. Good luck.

More than likely the bulb is burned out. Don't laugh people, some states that have mandatory emissions checks require that light to light when the motor is first switched on. If it don't light then, when you have an engine malfunction, it won't light either. Then you possibly could be fined for pollution.

If obtainable, take your vehicle to a Ford broking who would be waiting to propose. Pre-1996 automobiles can't be examined with widespread code readers. There are code readers on your vehicle yet looking one exterior of a sellers provider bay could properly be perplexing. do not forget approximately bearing directly to the provider easy because of the fact it ought to alerting you to a real concern. additionally, you should attempt removing the unfavorable battery cable from the battery, then reattach after a couple of minutes. This makes the engine laptop think again itself and many times removes codes that come on and not using a real reason. If there's a concern, the engine easy will come returned on. wish this facilitates-good success.

bulb is probably burnt out. it's a pain in the *** taking the whole dash apart to change the bulb so you want to make sure
start by going to autozone and get them to pull your codes. if they find any codes, that will confirm you have a working OBD (on-board diagnostic system), and you need to change the bulb for the light to come on.
then go ahead and change the bulb.
