Meiosis (or, Reduction-Division) is the process of creating sexual gametes. Thus the number of chromosomes will always be one half of the original number.
Human beings have 48 (not 46) chromosomes. Therefore, the number of chromosomes in every sperm and ovum will be 24.

meiosis reduces the chromosome number to 1/2 of the original.
For example, humans have 46 chromosomes in our body cells. After meiosis, our sperm or eggs will have 23 chromosomes each. (1 of each pair of homologous chromosomes, if you want to get technical.)

Don't you mean "mitosis"..the splitting of cells?
Mitosis will result in two identical cells, each with the same number of chromosomes as required for that specific organism.
