My mother in law does so much for my family and I am very grateful. I have a $500 budget. What gift would demonstrate my families love and gratitude best?

ASK her. Though she'll probably say "nothing". So get her some little luxuries: does she have friends that she calls long distance, get her some phone cards, a nice cashmere blanket that she can use in winter and display in summer. Is there something in her house that needs some minor repair or updating? Get a handyman.

Go to a local florist and ask about a bouquet-a-month deal. Most florists have some kind of special where they will deliver a flower arrangement once a month as a gift. Write her a nice note telling her that she will be receiving flowers for the rest of the year as a reminder every month of how much you all love her!

If she gets her hair done at a salon quite often, you could get her a gift certificate. What are her interests? Does she enjoy planting spring flowers, again a gift certificate for a local nursery/garden center or offer to go with her in the spring to pick out flowers and plants. You could make her a gift basket with different kinds of gift certificates along with products you know she will use. Even giving her coupons you and your family make up for hugs, kisses, dinners, walks, etc.

Buy her a Crosley "Juke Box" and fill it with music from the, 1940's & 1950's.
They have digital ones that even work with iPod's and a clever teen can keep adding more music that you find for her.
She'll LOVE hearing all the music that she heard in her teens and twenties. And if she has a social life with friends her own age, throw her a "sock hop" party for her birthday next year and invite her pals to come and drink sodas, eat burgers and fries and listen to the jukebox. That will take her back!

be care full old people do not want fancy expensive things she will only give it away or not use it put it in her cupboard upstairs best just to give her some loving and some company maybe a nice cardigan
