The reason why people get so worked up about the number 13 is firstly and obviously because they are very superstious and secondly is because of society and cultural beliefs people have been brought up in. In Italy for instance they believe 13 is a lucky number while in the UK, they believe it is unlucky. At the end of the day it's all up to what you personally believe.
I strongly doubt the Christians started it, who knows. Its is also worth interesting to state that the 13th card in the major arcana of theTarot deck is the Death card and Tarot has been been around for a few centuries . So to summarize its what you believe personally

As Jesus + 12 disciples makes 13 I dont see why just the last supper would be unlucky!
I think its related to Friday 13th which was the day in October 1307 when Philip of France had the Templar Knights Arrested so He could confiscate their treasure! Someone warned them though and very little was found!

NOT true, no one knows who started it.
Templars were arrested by King Phillips men October 13th, 1307 is what most reference when calling the number unlucky as well as "Friday the 13th".
13 original colonies, 13 stars and stripes on the first Flag of our nation. unLUCKY, i don't think so.
people get worked up about anything they can attribute to incidents that are paranormal in nature, FEAR opens the door to the imagination.

This is just another theory that I found made me giggle.
"The number 13 is unlucky because it is the number of full moons in a year. Women living in a natural environment tend to have their period during a full moon. A woman typically has 13 periods in a year. In the past, a woman who 'bled' during a full moon was seen as a witch. The fear of women's connection to the moon, as well as the association of the full moon with mental disorders has, according to this theory, caused the number to be seen as bad luck, and connected to supernatural forces."

one of the supposed reasons is that there were 13 people sat at the last supper.
but the one i like best is about friday the 13th.
that was the date that king phillip of france ordered all of the knights templar arrested, tortured and killed. certainly was an unlucky day for them!

its because 13 shared the Last Supper... hence connotations with betrayal. also 12 is sometimes seen as representing completeness, ie 12 tribes of Israel, cant think of anymore examples right now but i know they're there. so maybe 13 is kind of like an excess, disturbing the balance

don't know it's just a number that comes after 12, and people will believe anything they see written down, or told it has something to do with religion
