Columbus did not discover America he actually landed in the Carribean.
The people of that age used boats because that was all the technology that was available. If they wanted to get to places using the current and tides was quicker than walking.

I find it very unlikely that he discovered America, considering the world is several million years old. How many times have you seen people row the Atlantic, sometimes only 3 men in a team. The Vikings were probably crossing the Atlantic. The 'Christopher Columbus discovered America' fairy tale they teach you in school is rubbish.

you are really serious aren't you?
first off columbus didn't "discover" america there were people livng there for centuries prior to columbus stumbling upon it.
secondly, spain was on the other side of the ocean and the only means of transporting oneself across said ocean in 1492 was by boat!

Because Columbus was trying to open a new trade route to India and he got funding from Isabella of Spain and headed west to make a new trading route to the far east. That is why he called the natives indians to begin with.
