The pins have 3 different areas that could be measured
1) an uncompressed length
2) the middle bar - not including the springy end pieces
3) a fully compressed length

Plus the pin's width.

Or should I just measure the space on the watch where the pins fit?

The space where the pins go should be = to the compressed length plus the pin width.

If you are talking about a wrist watch,thepins are sold in millimeters .They go by numbers.My aunt is a jewelry designer.
