I no longer watch shows where a person jumps on the back of a crocodile or wrestles with an alligator. I fear that the ratings I give the show encourages people to do these acts and perhaps lead to their death. It irritates the animal. They are basically taunting it. They should find some other way to move the animals like drugging it or something.

I was in Australia when he died. The whole nation was devastated.
Although some can question his methods I doubt anyone could really question his motives.
"I have the best daddy in the whole world and I will miss him every day. When I see a crocodile I will always think of him and I know that Daddy made this zoo so everyone could come and learn to love all the animals. Daddy made this place his whole life and now it’s our turn to help Daddy." - Bindi Irwin (Steve's daughter)

Steve Irwin IS a legend. He was really passionate about wildlife, not just in Australia, but around the world. He was a very caring and dedicated man towards wildlife and his family. He grew up in crocodile country and therefore knew exactly what to do. His "aussie larrakin" persona held and captivated audiences world wide, he knew exactly how to explain the dangers to ALL children and adults in a way that you couldn't forget and could remember.
**sorry this is long**
As for those who think he did it for money, well you are partly correct, although he never spent the money on himself. He spent the money on improving the Australia Zoo, on equipment and housing to help care for injured animals, on research for wildlife, donations to Wildlife care organisations world wide.
Did you know that when he died, he did not leave behind the millions of $$ he made during his life. He purchased a great deal of land all over the world and returned it to the original owners - the Wildlife, therefore helping preserve nature and habitats around the world. He DID NOT profit from any movies, documentaries etc, any money he made during his lifetime, went back into the wildlife care.
While it may look like his "antics" aggrevated animals, this is far from it. He demonstrated how NOT to handle animals and the dangers involved when you do handle them that way!.. This was his way of saying" You cannot just walk up and pick up a wild creature this way, coz this is what will happen", and to me that is a great way of teaching especially children who have no fear. It shows them exactly what can happen and how dangerous they can be..enforcing the "LOOK BUT DON'T TOUCH" rule. He did NOT harm any animal in any way whatsoever. He saved many endangered species.
The day he died, was truly a great loss for his family, and also for the wildlife creatures and wildlife carers. His legend lives on in the Wildlife Warriors and ALL Australian Wildlife Carers and Rescuers. He is truly missed by all of us that came into contact with him, his knowledge is a great loss as well.

What he did was good to raise awareness about the animals that most people didn't know about or thought that they were dangerous beasts.
I don't really know why he was called the 'Crocodile Hunter' as that seems like someone who goes out and kills them. But he helped any animal he could. He also described them in a lot of detail and such.
I don't think he did a bad thing to animals.. he was there to help them when they were in danger or injured.

As someone who studies animals and is interested in conservation I have a mixed opinion. I have no doubts this man knew his stuff and honestly cared about animals and conservation efforts to protect them. You can just see from how his daughter is, you know he felt passionate about it if it rubbed off on his daughter the way it has. He has educated people about animals and conservation. A professor from my college who works with fresh water mussels and conserving them actually met him over in Australia and said he was very polite and from talking to other people that have met him he said you would be surprised how much money he donated to conservation efforts. I agree with george in that the baby stunt was extremely foolish along with other things he did. I watched him scoop up a rattlesnake with two hands. I think that gives a bad impression to kids because that was very foolish. Its something you don't do. I'm sorry about what happened to him but I thought it would happen eventually because he forgot one of the most important rule when working with wild animals and that is that they are WILD animals. No matter if its in a zoo or in the wild. I think he believed he had a "connection" with animals and granted he did understand them better then most people, he was not "one with them" in the way I think he thought he was.
Sorry about the length.

Steve really looked passionate about animals and i think that he really did love what he did, even though at times it wasn't a really obvious thing, but either way he was a good man, R.I.P> Steve Irwin

Good. How many crocs did he save from deplorable living conditions? I saw one of the episodes where some village kept a croc in a circular pen that was smaller in diameter than the croc was in length. It was horrible.

I liked watching him in action, but in hindsight he was a big head. The baby stunt I think was deplorable because he did actually die because he thought he was invincible, he should not have risked his baby's life. Remember all the flack Michael Jackson got when he dangled the baby from the window, well I think what Irwin done was far more dangerous.
