Marriage, to some people, is a bond that can't be broken if they are totally and completely committed to one another. The ones that don't go through with a wedding just feel that they don't need to make how they feel about one another legal and get the peice of paper. I have an Aunt that lived with a man for 25+ years and never felt the need to get married; however, in the state that she resided in she was considered legally married because of her long and loyal courtship.

I think due to the many failed marriages and hurt that people endure, people rather live together instead of getting married as they feel more secure than being married and making that life long commitment to that other person as they may not see the longevity of being with someone each and everyday for the rest of their lives...

Well, I asked the same question to my family members until I see why... I had commitment to my will be ex hubby and we both got married. then a little over the month, he was gone, he left me and my dad told me that marriage paper what drove us apart than living with someone. besides, he lied to so many people with his childish story and etc. I am getting paper file when my six month waiting list expired so I can be single once again.

Partly because divorce is extremely expensive and humiliating and puts all the power in the hands of lawyers and judges. The economic benefits of marriage tend to be overstated, and emotional commitment is what you make of it, not what a piece of paper says. I think a lot of people instinctively feel that marriage is just a lot of nasty red tape around your relationship. Technically, it's supposed to provide protection for the vulnerable, but in practice I don't see it. It provides protection to those who hire the best and most expensive lawyers.

I live with someone. I have no problem being alone. I live with him because I love him. He doesn't want to get married because he's been married before - twice. I don't want to get married, because when I was married (once) I felt less myself. I'm not willing to lose my identity again. I wouldn't mind having a husband, but I don't want to be somebody's wife. So I plan to stay single.
