Ok, I want to just burn all my DVD's to backup. I have a sony vaio with a prgram called Sonic and it will not burn DVD's with copyright protection (which is every one I own)... Is there some other program I can dowload that will let me burn my movies even if they have that stuff...I also just have 4.7 GB disk so what happens if my moves are bigger than that, most are dual layer and around 7 to 8 GB...last questions....can I just save the movie to my hard drive?? thanks

Ok, since you're going to backup up your personal DVD collection, do this:

Go to the web and get a copy of DVD Shrink (I think it's free), DVD43 (free) and buy Nero (a CD/DVD authoring app).

Install DVD43 (runs in background) and DVD Shrink and Nero.

Pop in a dvd in your dvd drive and DVD43 automatically senses it. Start DVD Shrink. Once it's done (it will save it to your hard drive), start Nero. Select 'Make DVD video' from Nero and burn your private/backup copy.

The DVD Shrink will automatically compress your dvd to fit on a 4.7GB dvd blank, so no worries there.

DVD Shrink creates a folder called DVD_VIDEO on your hard drive. Create another folder called Movies, then in that Movies folder, create a folder with the name of the movie. Copy or move the contents of DVD_VIDEO to your folder with the name of the movie.
I have a external drive where I have stored my private/backup movies. I haven't installed Media Center on my laptop yet, but when I do, I'll be able to view any of my movies from laptop.

Good luck on backing up your privately owned DVD's.

get RipIt4Me here

http://www.ripit4me.org/

RipIt4Me is a freeware utility that helps you backup your copy protected DVDs.

Recently released DVDs are now very often equipped with stronger copy protections - such as ARccOS™ and RipGuard DVD. Programs like DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter cannot handle these types of discs.

With the help of RipIt4Me, ripping these DVDs will be a very easy task. The program is fully automated and the wizard will guide you through all the necessary steps involved. If you prefer, there is also a true "1-Click" mode that will perform all the involved steps automatically for you.

If you are looking to get by the copy protection of Sony, DVDshrink will not cut it. I know I used to swear by DVDshrink only, and then many of the new DVDS started stumping DVDshrink. So a friend told me about AnyDVD and CloneDVD, and have not found any DVD yet it could not copy.
See my write up below.

Here are the tools I use to copy DVDS for my own personal back ups.

http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html......... - DVD Shrink Freeware will copy most DVDs but there are some it will not copy.

http://www.slysoft.com/?aid=50549.......... - AnyDVD and CloneDVD
These 2 programs are great, 21 day free trial, and I have them both. AnyDVD and CloneDVD they will take off encryption and protection.
Just bought An American Haunting and DVD Shrink would not copy it, but these 2 programs no problem. Have not had any movie yet they could not copy.
