Clearly, any of the ones below are my opinion:

The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
U2
Pearl Jam
The Grateful Dead
The Who
Rush
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Ramones

Led Zeppelin is my favorite, though I suppose the "greatest" would be the Beatles, though I don't quite consider them a rock band. Other possible answers could be:

Pink Floyd
The Clash
U2
Queen
The Rolling Stones
Nirvana
The Grateful Dead
Fleetwood Mac
...actually I could go on forever

Depends how technical you want to get on rock...

if it's rock and roll it's Led Zeppelin.

Otherwise, the greatest band was The Beatles

Everyone says this, but it's for a good reason. The Beatles were great. They made revolutionary music that had influenced MANY bands, and their stuff still sounds contemporary even today.

Other great bands include Led Zep, Pearl Jam, and Pink Floyd... but there are so many more.

Everyone else is saying the Beatles, which has a great deal of merit, so I'll say the Rolling Stones to be different. They weren't better than the Beatles, but they stayed together and performed for much longer than 10 years, and that should be counted as credit.

Alot of bands are worthy of the title
I'm kinda partial to Def Leppard
I love the music, but especially the band supporting their dummer when he lost his arm (instead of replacing him) He plays the drums with one hand and his feet still better than most people with 2 arms

It'd be a three way tie with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and I think Pink Floyd deserves to be in there too.

I'm going to be contrarian and go with The Rolling Stones

How many Beatles tunes have been used in a Martin Scorcese film? I rest my case.

*Some* of the stones' tunes have been used 2x by the great film director (Goodfellas, The Departed)

Even though they don't know when to quit, touring into their late 60's.......I'm going to pull for THE ROLLING STONES.

they even got a Magazine named after them......LOL
