I am stressed out to the point of insanity. I have no idea what to do. I recently graduated high school and I'm trying to figure out what to do with my life, i don't have a job, i don't have a plan, i don't have anything!! My family is putting all kinds of pressure on me to decide what i want to do, but its not that easy. I just cant take it anymore. If this doesn't stop I'm gonna make a decision where I'm gonna be unhappy and i don't want that. I just wish my family would back off, I've even told them to, but they wont stop. I wanna go to college( I'm still not sure for what), and my family is telling me if i cant make a decision i might as well just join the army. They make me feel like such a failure. I'm seriously on the verge of ending all this with a gun. I just need something to help me decide and all this to stop.

It's not possible to know what you want to do for a life time at 16.

If you have the option of going to college, just do the subjects/ courses that interest you. That way at least you'll have some kind of success.

If it is not an option, just try for a job that will let you take some classes.

Don't despair, most people have 2 or 3 careers these days.

Go to college. The first two years you need to take the General Education requirements (in all different areas), and that will give you a chance to learn about a lot of different areas and decide which appeals to you most strongly.

A lot of students who enter college with a specific plan in mind change their minds, so you won't "be behind" in that sense if you enter as Undeclared Major.

You are not a failure -- there's nothing wrong with not having made all of your biggest life decisions at 18. A lot of people who thought they knew what they wanted at 18 end up deeply unhappy about their choices.

Do not join the Army; do not end it.

Tell your family that a college education will help you no matter what you decide to do, and that the process of getting one will help you make a good decision as to what field to pursue.

If they won't help you, get any kind of job, and put yourself through (you can start with Community College, which is cheap, and transfer to a 4-year later).

Okay, point taken. Man, relax. We all go through this crap right after high school.
There must be SOMETHING you like to do. Go get a part time job somewhere.
Get to your nearest college and make your major LIBERAL ARTS. That is a general major and everything you choose as far as what is required of you with courses, you can ALWAYS use towards anything else if you do decide what it is you want to do later on down the road. If you change your major later on down the road, the courses you've taken with the liberal arts can be counted. Get me?
You've got way too much time on your hands. Your parents want to see you doing something. So, go and do something. If you were out on your own you would have to be doing something. You would have to be at least working. Don't get lazy. You don't deserve a break just because you made it through 12 years of school. lol
Get busy, go make some money, and build some confidence in yourself while you're at it. Good luck.

Take it from someone who had 4 majors in college. DO WHAT YOU ARE NATURALLY GOOD AT. Everyone has a talent and by now you probably know yours. Can you draw? Graphic design school would be a fun and lucrative field. Are you a good writer? Try a journalism or English major. With a four year degree, you can be certified as a teacher and maybe teach English or literature. Good in science? Major in biology. You can become a clinical researcher and help drug makers gt FDA approval for drugs that can help people. The above mentioned careers are ones my friends or I hold. You have to know what you are good at, and what you can do with that talent. Once you find that out, you can figure out what to major in when you go to college. And if it is a natural talent, you WILL excell. A lot of people will be struggling to do what you do well naturally so you will be ahead of the game. And, everybody likes to do what they are good at, so if you find a job in that field, you won't even feel like you're working. Good luck!

I would say the first step might be to have a chat with a counselor of some type - ending it all with a gun is never a solution. The next step is to either go to college, and be an undecided major for a while until you figure out a solution, or join the military, if that is of interest. Either way, this is a temporary issue and can be solved.

Give the military some serious consideration.

You get to travel. You get educational benefits that would likely pay for your degree. You have the opportunity to learn a skill (or skills) that you can put to use in the civilian world.

Granted, now is not the most ideal time for anyone to join the military, when we're at war, but you might want to give it some serious thought.

Go talk to a couple of recruiters from different branches. See if one of them "clicks" with you. Don't feel pressured to sign up on the spot, but listen to what they have to say, and if it seems like the way to go, go for it.

I was in a similar situation to you in 1992 : college wasn't the answer, and I had no direction, no skills, etc. I joined the USMC. It was the best decision I ever made.

Best of luck to you.

It's completely normal not to know what you're going to do after high school! My advice would be to sign up for liberal arts classes at your local community college. If you want to make any kind of money, you really need a degree. (You could argue that you can make lots of money in trades...but if you don't know what trade you want, plus you have to start off at the bottom...) While taking classes, you can get a feel for what you like. And you'll meet others who might inspire you.

I also assure you that lots of us start off on one road and go onto something completely different. So don't go crazy trying to figure out the path...you end up on a different one half the time.

It could be that you could do well in the army but you can't just quit if you decide you hate it! Your family can't make your decisions for you. Plus the longer you're out of education the harder it is to get into the swing of it. Hold down a job for the meantime while you figure out a plan for yourself.

If you were to join the Army it would give you a few more years to decide on what you like, want, ect. You can grow a little more and see/do things on Uncle Sam's dime. Then still go to college when you get out.
