Its all ' in the eye of the beholder'. If you enjoy them at all - thats all that matters. If you enjoy them then the're 'good'.

Danielle Steele and Sydney Sheldon used to write sort of half decent books. Their earlier novels have good characterisation and interesting plots and they took care in writing them.
I gave up on Steele ages ago because her writing became so formulaic it just wasn't true. She doesn't even attempt to write a paragraph that doesn't contain every cliche in the book and I don't think she's had an original thought for years now.
Sheldon has become a huge disappointment and I don't go near his book these days. It's like he really no longer cares - he has a book to churn out that will guarantee him another sum in the bank so he reels it off with no respect for his readers any more. Doesn't bother to develop his characters at all and has also become very cliched.

With both of them, it's as if they have a publishing deal to fulfill and a deadline to meet and so any old rubbish will do.

my mums fave authors are danielle steel and jackie collins (along with barbra taylor bradford.) she has loads of steel's books and quite a few of collin's. she's got a couple of sydney sheldons books too but i dont know what she thinks of them.

ive read about half a dosen steel books and there was only one i disliked(i think it was klone and i?) steel has a plain style of writing that is easy to follow which is good cos i sometimes read halfway and then stop reading it and go on to another book (i have a short attention span)
i ve read chances, lucky and lady boss by jackie collins cos they're some of my mums fave books. and i was hooked i loved them. lucky is my fave character(see my name) and also gino. her books are different from steels but jackie keeps the readers gripped non stopped.

Well to be honest they're not my cup of tea, but hey! If they float your boat and get you reading, then brill.
Would say if you like Jackie Collins you should read Jilly Cooper, all the sex and trash but loads better written.

I like Jackie Collins the best. Her writing is raw, blunt and graphic. I write like her myself. One day I will be famous like her if I don't give up and keep writing realistic prose.

I used to read loads of Daniel Steel books but now find them very predictable. The books she writes are great if you want easy reading.

i have read steel. i guess she's alright, if you like the drama.
the girls are always too ... hum mm, how shall i put it? naive and hopeless for my style.

but i did like the one on world war II - it was based on a real story, and she wasn't that hopeless.

dreadfully romantic, but nice.
