The Simpsons's Spingfeild was created to be "Anytown, USA", a number of episodes have hints which tend to discount states 9see the link). The name Sprinfeild was used as all 50 states have a town with this name.

Last Time: Springfield is an inside joke on the Simpsons. There are at least 6 states with a city named Springfield; they even had Lisa tell a friend she met once that people were never sure where Springfield was.
It's a Cartoon!

The uncertain location of Springfield is a long-running joke in the series, based on the fact that 34 states in the United States have at least one community with that name (several have more than one). Episodes frequently make fun of the fact that Springfield's state has never been revealed, by adding further conflicting descriptions, obscuring onscreen map representations, and interrupting conversational references. In actuality, the exact geographic location (and geographic features) of Springfield is probably best described as wherever (and whatever) suits the writers for a particular episode the best. It is perhaps best to say that the fictional Springfield is set in a fictional state with an exact location in the United States which will vary from episode to episode. On the episode linked to the X-files, there was a particular reference of the town being in the central states of america. Such as Kentucky, Kansas and so on.
A web page discussing Springfield's location states that due to the many contradictory clues, it is impossible for Springfield to exist in any set location [2]. Though in the episode Blame It on Lisa, the character Lisa Simpson addresses the issue of Springfield's location by saying, "It's a bit of a mystery, yes. But if you look at the clues, you'll figure it out."
Springfield carries the characteristics of many cities in the USA, and its precise location isn't relevant to the show.

to piggy back on everyone Else's answers.
Springfield is (or was at the time they started the show) the most common name for a city in the US.
Shelby ville would be the second most popular state.
They did in the episode behind the music refer to this Northern Kentucky family.
However they also have narrowed it to the middle America section of the country. I think at one point they narrowed to Kentucky, Missouri, and Illinois.
But they do keep it a mystery. Maybe they will finally answer this age old question in the MOVIE!!

The geographic location of Springfield is never stated, but Springfield is generally considered to depict, in a lampooning manner, "bread-and-butter" Middle America.

They intentionally keep that a mystery.
Several states have towns named Springfield.
Some of those states also have towns named Shelbyville.
None, however, has a state capital named Capital City.
