hi,

I am going to buy a big-bandwidth internet connection, and I was wondering how could I split it. Is the device that I need called a hub? And how does that work, I connect the hub to my home line and then and computer that needs internet bandwidth to the hub? And how will the hub split the available bandwidth? Can I tell it where to give more?

You need a router. You set it up between your modem and your computers.

Modem-->Router-->Computers

Some routers let you cap the connection speed of each machine, but don't count on your average $40 router to do that.

I won't describe in detail how a router works, as frankly, it's rather boring. Just know this: It splits the signal.

There's tons of routers out there. If you give a ballpark on how much you want to spend, I can recommend a few in that pricerange.

No, you need a router. Go to BestBuy, Office Depot, etc. and ask for a router for your DSL or Broadband, whatever you're getting. If you ask me, get the wireless, and buy a wireless card or port for each computer you wish to network to the router for Internet access. I say wireless, because its easier and cheaper, no wires to string, you can move about wherever you get a signal, and you aren't limited to 4 or 6 ports. Hook your modem via the "Ethernet" port to the router. Install your wireless cards or ports, and surf away. You'll need a firewall and access ports, but that should be included in most router/card packages.

Hubs will work for DSL but not for Cable. Safest bet is buy yourself a router.

Plug your broadband modem into the WAN port of the router and your other deviced in the open ports.

More information can be found if you search for Home Networking.

you need to no longer connect some thing except the router to the modem, it really is going to trash your connection. ALL machines ought to attach with the router. The router must have a community port marked LAN. maximum have 4 or 5.

it depends on what service you are getting. if you get DSL or cable, your service provider will give you a router, this routers comes with an ethernet port. you can connect a hub or a switch to this port and you will have more ethernet ports available, its basically a spliiter. its works just like a power strip. it allows multiple devices to connect to one connection.

Router is the easiest way to go. Just plug it in and your off. Only time you have to onfigure anything is if you plan to do wireless.
