It was based on a system of a dowery that was given to the man to marry the woman. The idea was it was per industrial days and that the man would have a wife, but also another mouth to feed and cloth. The idea was kid of like an annuity you were paid for in essense taking the finanical burden of the females family.

In todays world there is no dowery and women can now work as they are proud of saying. So why is alimony still being paid if there is no longer a dowery?

I agree. It should be outlawed. Women want to be equal. So they should work and not expect an x to keep them up.

It would be no different if you were married, your wife made $1 Million a year, and you were able to stay home with the kids. The lifestyle in which you have been accustomed to would be gone in a divorce.

As a mean of settlemnet of assets, the "bread winner" may be liable for living expenses for a specific period of time. The time period will probably vary as the circumstances in every divorce are varied.

Alimony and Palimony are typically a different avenue of approach rather than splitting a couple's bank account in half, but alimony and palimony may also be added to the decision even after a 50/50 split of the assets.

A dowry was given prior to a marriage. These are given in a divorce. It is basically the same premise of child support.

Actually, far fewer women get alimony then did in the 1970s. According to a l986 Census Bureau survey, fewer than 15% of all women who had ever been divorced or were currently separated had obtained an agreement or court order to receive alimony. It's probably even less today. Which is too bad. Because if you have kids and end up divorced, you are probably screwed. Because mothers tend to make much less than fathers, and much less than women who never had children.

So my husband goes to school for 10 years becomes a well known surgeon. I work while he goes to school as he is unable to do both. My education ended at 2nd year University, could not handle the school and work requirements. 15 years later he is making close to 800,000 a years and wants a divorce. My dowry came in the form of 10 years worth or working to put a roof over our heads and tuition. I think that I am entitled to a little alimony, until I am able to finish my education and return to the work force. Perhaps it is the definition of dowry that eludes you.

Because some times there are women who stand behind and take care of a husband or his children for most of there lives, to help them make a better pay check and once they get a better life he or she leaves them ,so why should one take it all when if it wasn't for the other, they wouldn't have gotten so far...
