Visual effect. It looks like there is more product than there really is. Same as say your yoghurt being stacked in rows by flavor, even though there is a stack of three in the front your brain believes there is more than they actually have on display. It's all about marketing.

I don't know the answer, but I can guess a couple reasons:

1. Makes it look like there's more fruit, so you get the impression that the store is plentiful.

2. So the customers can see the BACK of the produce, too, so they know this store is a GOOD store and is not simply turning the best sides of rotty fruit to the front.

to make it seem like they have an abundance of produce? that is only reason i can really think of,,, unless its also tied into their survilance cameras, keep people from stealing that onion,,,, stores also do it with their perfume displays,,,,, i work for an inventory company, it makes it hard sometimes,, as i have to catch myself from counting whats in the mirrors lol

I've never seen this where I live. But, I'm assuming its to make the display look more abundant than it actually is. It looks like they have a plentiful stock.
