No win, No fee means exactly that. If they don't win your case, you don't pay a fee to the attorney.
HOWEVER:
1. That applies to civil cases only.
2. Court costs and filing costs are paid for by the plaintiff.
3. Most states have a law that the most an attorney can charge on a contingency basis is 1/3rd of the final award, AFTER expenses are paid.
4. They can't affect the other side's fees

As usual the ignorant people have been giving misinformation NO WIN NO FEE is a generic terms given to conditional fee agreements, what it means is that if a case is won or settled are certain fee is agreed beforehand between the client and the solicitors, everyone is informed so unlike you guys belief there is no scam. Now some can suggest a sucess fee which can assessed or set by the court to maximum 100% of the solicitors rate, its around normally 20-30% typically.
Where they say you get all your compensation, this means that your reasonable costs are either agreed by the otherside or assessed by the court separately to any compensation.
Contingency fees are not allowed for contention matters, ie once proceedings are involved, but can be agreed for non contentious matters.

Suppose you are injured so you cannot work again. The judge will award you damages to enable you to go on living. But he or she will not add on a substantial percentage to pay the "no win no fee" charge that your lawyer will claim. That cannot be right. If you cannot work again, you should be recompensated at a level so that you do not have to do so or live on less than the judge beleives necessary.
No win no fee is a way of enabling people to access the law when it has been unaffordable for anybody on any normal income. There should be a decent level of legal aid instead.
Also, society should look after people with particular needs anyway. If you have become paralysed, why should you get a legal settlement enabling you to pay for, for instance, lots of special facilities in your house if you are injured by somebody you can sue, whereas if you are injured by a criminal who cannot pay or you are paralysed by illness (and you are not rich enough to have expensive private insurance) you will get far less. Perhaps there should be proper social provsion for everybody and criminal sanctions for those who cause harm. This would confine the civil law to things like breach of business contracts, and even then there should be better protection for ordinary people.

Agreed. The word Lawyer and the word Liar sound remarkably alike for a reason. Read the fine print. And if they win, their usual take is about 35-45% of the award.

They are all in it together. And I've lived through some of the legal things that people don't want to go through. It's a crap shoot, you would be better off, spinning a wheel to punish you. Just don't break the law. I paid the best attorney in the County here in Okla-coma and he said I would never see inside of a jail cell. Well, guess what I spent 20 months in prison. So money doesn't always get the wanted response from the Judge.

They take 1/3 of your winnings if you win. That means as long as they win more than 33% of their cases they make a profit. Simple as that. This encourages them to try to get as much money as possible and not take stupid risks. I'd rather my lawyer have a financial interest in me winning then pay him an hourly rate and hope he works on my case.

They only choose cases that they know they can win. Just because you go to a lawyer with your case doesn't mean they are going to represent you. So if they are postive they can win your case, they will represent you, thus making a profit.
