I'd say b) opposition to American Communism. In the 1940's Nixon had been a member of the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) and had been very vocal about Communist infiltration (actually, that's really the only reason he was elected - by insinuating that his opponents were all Communists!). In the 1950's he did pretty much the same thing, getting elected as VP along with Eisenhower in 1956.
Edit - just as a post script, the answer above mine deals with the 1970's, just in case you had any doubts about my answer! Best of luck!

nicely, of route Richard Nixon became the Vice-President To Dwight Eisenhower, even with the undeniable fact that i imagine that you're probable touching on Checkers his kinfolk dogs. Nixon used his "Checkers" speech to guarantee himself that he may be on the cost ticket back with President Eisenhower (who, it became idea had to to unload Nixon for yet another candidate). The speech made a center classification hero out of Nixon, some thing that, searching decrease back, became an quite puzzling situation to do and Eisenhower had little decision yet to save Nixon on the cost ticket. Checkers kept Nixon's political life.
