It combines two major art forms, music and drama. Not only do you have the musical score to enjoy, but also a visual drama with a recognizable plot and singing. It has been popular among different classes.
I love opera.

Opera has endured because it tugs at our heart strings with its drama, or provides us with timeless comedy, all while we are privileged to listen to the most beautiful voices in the world.
Not every opera endures, and I'm sure some of the experimental ones will not. Good opera becomes addictive over the years, and you find yourself becoming an opera addict, rather than just a curious observer.
I am really looking forward to seeing a brand new opera "The First Emperor" in January in New York. I think it was directed by whoever made the film "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon."

Opera has endured throughout the ages because it is timeless. By timeless i mean that the stories that they are about have the same relevance today that they had when they were written. For example: La Boheme. A tragic love story that as much emotional impact today as it did when it premiered. That's why it has survied.

Because a small group of rich people have supported it for the whole time, except for now, where the taxpayers support it.
