If you live in America and you are a member of a Protestant sect, you fit in society. If you are an American Catholic, you fit in very well in society, since true catholicity has been diluted with the formula of "Americanism, Modernism , Humanism and Materialism, all of which have been condemned by the Catholic Church. Might I suggest reading the encyclicals by Pope Leo Xlll.
The political order in society in relation to the Protestant sects is a bond that has been cemented since the formation of the 13 colonies. The Catholic minority however, was not allowed to vote until the mid 1800's.
The Catholic Church in America was put under pressure to conform and America's Bishops capitulated, slowly but surely, American Catholics became more mainstream in society rather than living a truly Catholic life. Instead of Catholics proclaiming Christ the King in our lives, we now proclaim the lifestyle of "the King of Queens". We pattern our lives now after people who do not ever refer to or reflect anything spiritual in their daily lives. That is anti-Catholic. Most entertainment programming is purposefully designed to deny the existence of Christ other than in profanity or cliches.
The difference between a church and a sect is that the Church proclaims the truth based on Scripture and Tradition and always teaches these in an unwavering way, because truth does not change.
Sects on the other hand sway with the wind and might or might not hold some or any of Truths of Scripture and Tradition. In everyday use it has become a slogan defining groups considered "dangerous", since they offend against the fundamental values of the liberal democratic society.
According to the religious usage of the term, those groups are called sects which have broken away from the general or national Churches. Often sects hold on to particular values, religious ideas or ways of life of the original ecclesiastical community. But these particular basic principles are understood in an absolute way and are lived out in a community life that is strictly isolated from the former body and that aims at self-preservation and self-defence. The following characteristics arise from these basic conditions: some one-sided religious ideas (e.g. holding that the end of the world is near), refusing to exchange ideas with people of different opinions; an over-enthusiastic promotion and pursuit of their own ideas; fierce proselytizing, overconfidence in their sense of mission towards an often despised world; a conception of salvation that is exclusive to a certain number of people belonging to the specific group.
The Catholic Church is fundamentally opposed to many political issues such as abortion, same sex marriage, adoption by homosexuals. The sects have differing views and opinions on these matters.
The Catholic Church does not have anything to gloat about by the way. Many Catholic political leaders do not live thier Catholic faith and confuse themselves as well as their Catholic constituents by being pro-death (for abortion), pro homosexual marriage and on and on. They push the false notion of "separation of Church and State". Making the state hold a higher place than their religion.

The differences are many but very subjective. Some nations consider the Mormons as a sect, the Nazis sent to concentration camps the Witnesses of Jehovah, the French just dissolved a sect in the Alps that was absolutely harmless. The Jews and the Romans persecuted the Christians for centuries as a dangerous sect of "illuminati" until Emperor Constantin gave them the right to follow their faith freely and Theodose make Catholicism the official religion of the Empire. So the persecuted became soon the persecutors..... Some sects are just harmless reunions of goofy people, some are dangerous like the Scientology and would rip you off of everything you have except if you are Tom Cruise or John Travolta and serve as propagandists. The sectarian phenomenon is old like the world and must be approached with caution and without prejudices, case by case. Sects and established churches do not relate well insofar as they are competing for your soul, your brains and your arms, sometimes your money... Beware !!

basically the authority of the Pope, plus some minor doctrinal factors, which incorporates even if the Holy Spirit proceeds from the daddy on my own or from the daddy and the Son. There also are adjustments in how some issues are done. as an example, the Orthodox provide the sacraments of Baptism and affirmation concurrently to toddlers, at the same time as the Catholic Church provides Baptism to toddlers yet waits till youngsters for affirmation. both church homes have a valid priesthood and bonafide sacraments. Having married clergymen is only no longer a large difference because the completed jap ceremony of the Catholic Church also has married clergymen.

Since the separation of church and state The church has little influence on society.
Sects are just fighting within the church.
The Christian work ethic and family did bring about the society we have today. But they are far away now.
