to avoid Toxoplasmosis being passed on to your child in the placenta. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toxoplasmosis)

however, i did read (and was told) if you have lived with cats for a long time you have probably already contracted it and are now immune. (you can be tested -- if you test positive you are immune and your child cannot contract it.)

yes, avoid doing it if you can. but if you have to do it, most ob/gyn's recommend using plastic gloves while scooping and of course, washing hands thoroughly after (and i would use purell as well.)

its a urban legend. pregnant women should stay away from cat litter boxes because of the waste cats leave, there is something in it that can harm your pregnant wife and baby. having cats in the house while she is pregnant is fine, but she can not clean the cat boxes once soo ever! i have 3 cats and i am pregnant.. have had them with two pregnancy's.. nothing happened to the baby after he was born.

yes because it can cause Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a parasite, Toxoplasmosis gondii. Most cases in humans result from contact with cat feces, particularly those of cats who hunt rodents or birds. Non-hunting cats who stay indoors 100 percent of the time represent a much smaller risk. The danger of infection occurs when you come in contact with infected soil or litter boxes.

Yep. it's a great excuse to NOT do a chore for 9+ months. You can get toxoplamosis from the kitty poo. It can be bad for you and the baby, so it's best to stay away from the cat box while you're pregnant.

Yes there is a disease you can get from feline fecal matter. I cannot rightly recall the name, but it becomes a blood born pathgen that can harm the baby

The same goes for birds and fish. You should not be around bird feces or fish feces.
