There are plenty of intelligent people who are into Star Trek who just like to get together to have fun. Sure there are those who go overboard or get too into it but there are those in just about every fan group you can find. Think of it this way at least they are not causing riots like some soccer/football/basketball ect.. fans do.
By the way good use of the word aberrant, nice to see you have a dictionary. Really though if you think people getting together to talk about or dress like their favorite TV character is the most aberrant thing people do, you SERIOUSLY need to get out more.

As a whole, science fiction fans are more intelligent than their Soprano-fan friends. They are more willing to put aside outer appearances in favor of inner worth. These are people that epitomize the phrase "The higher the intelligence, the more the need for play." You would be surprised how many engineers, computer analysts and programmers, and scientists are among those costumed fans. (and by the way, the Trek fans are not necessarily a different group than the Comic fans or the LOTR fans or the Anime fans. There is a LOT of cross-over.) At least most of these folks don't need to drink themselves into oblivion to have a fun time. As for being losers, it depends on the criteria. Maybe it's the Business Administration grads with their wife and 2.5 kids that are the losers. . .

They are quite rabid about it, huh?
I'd say they were, but those Lord of the Ring fans could give them a run for their money.
Then there's the anime people. Now THERE'S a bunch of folks that scare me, talking like how they wish the girls were real...you know.
And I'm betting you've never been in an online forum where they are talking about Harry Potter, or Buffy, or Doctor Who. The fanfics alone outshine any craziness at a convention, especially the porn fiction!!
So, yes, there are some people who love their fandoms, and sometimes get a little carried away by that love. Don't judge, just stand back and be amazed.

It is interesting that you label all of these people l o o s e r s, yet they are part of an ongoing part of society that has lasted more than 40 years, was able to get the name a a space shuttle changed and have made significant contributions to society in general. Some of those Klingons run very respectable charities and charitable organizations. Get a clue. You may be the l o o s e r here.

It's called roll playing and it is not new. You can go to convention where people are play rolls as vampires, elves, knights, hobbits, almost any fantasy figure you can think of. Most don't dress like that in real life. They are there to have fun and for a few days leave the real world behind. If they were running around dressed in their street cloths wheres the fun in that.

Ohhhhh, I always wanted to go to one of those. Such fun. I grew up on the reruns of the original Star Trek and loved the show (still do). Then when TNG came out, I was hooked. I've seen every episode at least 6 times!

I have followed Star Trek from the beginning and feel there were many advances in science from this show. however, the earlier Science - Fiction movies and serials on radio and television have proven to inspire science to new heights. many have grown up wondering " is this possible " then have gone through school learning how to do it.

They can be odd especially when massed together like a war boarding party, but I think the comic book fanatics are definitely stranger.
