Our neighbor "rescued" a bunch of baby goldfish from an outside pond. She gave us 9 but our tank is only 50 gallons. Where can we humanely get rid of the fish?

She took the fish out of her little yard pond because it was getting so cold and they had lots of babies. Cold they survive the winter there?

Try your local pet store.

Absolutely they could have survived the winter in the pond. Gold fish almost go into hibernation when it gets cold and the top of the pond ices over. They won't eat when it is cold and it is not unheard of for them to become part of the ice when it is extremely cold and to be fine the next summer.

As for getting rid of them take them to the local pet store they should take them. Or try craigs list.

As for three fish in a fifty gallon tank give me a break, unless these goldfish are a foot long each.

They would not have survived if the pond is less then 5 ft deep. An area in the surface needs to remain open for gas exchange. Alot of people accomplish it with a pond heater and a filter to keep the water movin.
Im with zoe, all that she said was correct.
You can make a holding tank and keep it in your basement or heated garage out of 2 by 4s and pond liner. Ive seen many people make holding tanks for thier pond fish instead of buying an expensive glass tank. You can also get big rubbermaid tubs cheap and they make great quarantine tanks or holding tanks themselves. Most hang on the back filters fit right on the rim too.

50 gallons is more than enough space to house baby goldfish considering that there are no more other fish in the tank that wll eat them or otherwise crowd the tank. Filtration is also a factor. You need powerful filtartion with a water flow adjuster because goldfish are considered to be one of most dirties fish to care for and you don't want the fish to get sucked in by the filter. As far as the cold weather is concerned. Goldfish are coldwater fish. They may be able to withstand the pond as long as the pond is huge in volume to maintain and substain such tempertures.

Do you know what type of goldfish they are? Unless they are fancies, you cannot keep them in a 50 gallon tank. If they are fancies, you can keep 3 in your tank.
Bring them to the petstore.

Why did she remove them from a pond? If they were hatched there, and grew there, then obviously the pond was acceptable for them. Put them back in the pond.

My mother in law left her goldfish in a childs wading pool she converted into a pond for the winter and they were fine... we live in Maine so it gets very cold here. Gold fish are very hardy.

Yes they can survive the winter in the pond!

Some pet stores will take gold fish but they get LARGE shipments of them already so they may not take any!

Any friends or family that will take them?

First of all separate the males from the females, you can get a tank divider. Ask people if they want a fish or two and instruct them in proper care.

Well if they have just been bred then leave them a couple of days and find a lonely best friend and give them 2! Or you could buy a large pond outside in your garden (IF U HAVE ONE) and put them in there. And one main thing buy lots of fish food :)
