Does he have a video game box--X box, Playstation, etc.
Many times there are video games on Ebay or Amazon that are slightly used but shrinkwrapped nonetheless and less expensive to buy. You can't tell that they are used when they are shipped, unless it is a really cheap used one. Search on half.com (division of Ebay ) for these. GameStop also carries used computer games that look brand-new, but often they are almost the same price as new.
A CD player is nice to buy too, there are some good models out there and they are really inexpensive these days.
Boys like anything to assemble and disassemble like X-men, Bionicles (Lego makes these, about $10 each), Transformers, or the more complex Lego models.
I would stay away from plastic models where you have to paint and glue, a 12 year old gets frustrated with the fine detail work.
My 13 year old is asking for a renewal of Dog Fancy magazine, Bionicles "Vezoo" and " Okardes", Lego Mobile Defense tank, walkie talkies, and hand-held travel games like "20 Questions." Its a game where you think of something and the game tries to figure out what you're thinking within asking 20 questions on the display.

if he has any hobbies, use that to get an idea. if he likes to hang out with his friends, get him a gift certificate to the movie theater or a local recreational place (bowling, batting cages, mini golf, go carts). If he is not into sports try a personal CD player or a new movie and some popcorn.

Get him a handheld GPS receiver and take him out geocaching. All around you, people have hidden stuff for you to find. Some of them are big Tupperware containers full of trade items. Others are tiny little containers with only enough room for a slip of paper to sign your name. Geocaches can be in the woods where you have to hike, or right downtown. GPS units run anywhere from $80.00 on up. I recommend the yellow Garmin E-Trex. They have them in the hunting department of stores.

I recommend maybe a prepaid mobile phone. In fact, I bought my 12-yr.old cousin a Boost Mobile i415 and loaded it with $20.00 credit. It's a lot cheaper than purchasing a Wii, Xbox, or Playstation.

An iTunes or Napster gift card would be perfect or one of those "Now That's What I Call Music" CDs. Kids at this age love music.

that's tough... the best thing you could do is go to a toy store and ask one of the workers what some of the most popular toys and games are this season. they will know what the kids want. good luck shopping!!

A cute tiny nice bicycle OR a nice drawing equipment.... for improving his creativity. Instead of giving him playstations which surely will make him dull sooner or later.
Give him some nice drawing pencil colors or drawing equipments for his inner creativity.
If you know what I'm talking about here ;)
