Origin of bergamot oil
This tree is native to South East Asia, but was introduced to Europe, and particularly Italy and is also found in the Ivory Coast, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria.
Bergamot oil is made from a tree that can grow up to four meters high, with star-shaped flowers and smooth leaves, bearing citrus fruit resembling a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, but in a pear-shape. The fruit ripens from green to yellow.
The oil is one of the most widely used in the perfumery and toiletry industry and forms, together with neroli and lavender, the main ingredient for the classical 4711 Eau-de-cologne fragrance. It is used to flavor Earl Grey tea.
The name is derived from the city Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where the oil was first sold.
I love the smell of Bergamot and use Sarah Jessica Parker's perfume called "Lovely" because it has a lot of Bergamot oil in it.

Monarda, which is the botanical name for Bergamot is a true native plant here in United States. It was brought to the attention of the Europeans in the late 1500’s when a Spanish botanist, Monardes discovered it and cataloged it in his book of botany. Since he thought it smelled like the bergamot , a small citrus fruit found growing along the Mediterranean coast, he called in bergamot.
A favorite of the native Americans this fragrant plant was used medicinally for many ailments. It was so popular with our Colonial people for tea and as a cure

Monarda didyma (Bergamot, Scarlet beebalm, Scarlet Monarda, Oswego Tea, or Crimson Beebalm) is an aromatic herb in the family Lamiaceae, native to eastern North America from Maine west to Ohio and south to northern Georgia. Its name is derived from its odor. This is not the same as Bergamot Orange which is a citrus which also has an aromatic oder similar to the herb. Both are used in making certain teas.
The herb is fairly common and you should be able grow it with no problem.

Bergamot is an American herb that was once widely used by native Americans. It was introduced to the early colonists by the Oswego Indians, and Oswego tea was made by colonists during the time of the Boston Tea Party. The dark pink, red and purple flowers smell pleasantly of oranges. They are a nice addition to the flower border and attract bees.

Bergamot is an essential oil from the fruit of a citrus tree, Citrus aurantium bergamia. I suppose you could plant one if you could find the seeds, or if you could get a seedling. As to why it smells like lavender to you - odors are subjective, just as colors or tastes are.
